Global South: What is that?
So what is this rise of the global south. Who started it? Where, When was it started? Who is still perpetuating this framing of the global south.
This reminds me of how I went from Vietnamese to just Asian. I had to relearn what Asian mean, and specifically what it means to be Asian as defined by the white people.
I wonder if this global south is the framing by the western powers, to lump the barbarian together in one broad category. Since we cannot call them barbarians, why not call them global south.
the Chinese empire used to call the people to the south, the people to the south. Which is Yue Nam, and translated to Viet Nam. And some how the American turned it to Vietnam. And it is sort of stay Vietnam in most text. Then I just noticed the American has a new category. Vietnam as south Vietnam, and Viet Nam as north Vietnam. I was surprised to see this in 2024 at the US school’s district machine.
I wonder, would these nations be called by their proper name? or would they rather call themselves the southern people? or Global South?
